Aztec, by Gary Jennings

Gary Jennings's Aztec is the extraordinary story of the last and greatest native civilization of North America. Told in the words of one of the most robust and memorable characters in modern fiction, Mixtli-Dark Cloud, Aztec reveals the very depths of Aztec civilization from the peak and feather-banner splendor of the Aztec Capital of Tenochtitlan to the arrival of Hernán Cortás and his conquistadores, and their destruction of the Aztec empire. The story of Mixtli is the story of the Aztecs themselves---a compelling, epic tale of heroic dignity and a colossal civilization's rise and fall.

The first time I read Aztec was in the 80’s and I loved the book. So far I have read this book about 6 times. Recommended to many people and gave as a present in printed an electronic format.Mr. Jennings trilogy (Aztec, Aztec Blood and Aztec Autumn) give us a very good understanding about life in pre Colombian life in Mexico, what happened during the conquest, and how life was in the New Spain during the Spanish Colony. Using a very interesting narrative splashed with some sexual stories (if you get offended by those stories, please feel free to skip those; if you like the steamy stories, be sure to mark those to go back and read them at your leisure…)Back in the early 80’s I meet Dr. Eduardo Matos Moctezuma (a prominent Mexican archaeologist. Who directed excavations at the Templo Mayor) at a book store in Mexico City. After I congratulated him for his great article in Scientific American about The Great Temple of Tenochtitlán (August 1984 ) I asked Dr. Matos if he had read Mr. Garry Jennings’s book Aztec. He said yes!And I asked his opinion; he said: obviously the fictitious main character Mixtly, never existed; however, seem that Mr. Jennings did a good job researching the Aztecs life and it is full of details of the life at the time.I can say that Mr. Gary Jennings started my interest in history. Too bad that I never meet him…

Gary Jenning's Aztec is my favorite book of all time. I first read it about a decade ago, and have reread it numerous time since, and it gets better every time. I recommend it to everyone looking for a book recommendation and I have bought several copies to gift to people. The story is epic, beautiful spun, and easy to read (well, except for maybe the bits written in the voice of the priest, those can be pretty verbose with some impressive vocabulary). Its an exciting page turner about the entire life of the main character Mixtli, ranging from his young childhood to his old age while also informing the reader about many aspects of Aztec life and it was well- researched and historically accurate. One thing to note is that this is not a standard sized paperback - its a rather long book, but well worth it. If you like long epic stories definitely give this one a tryOne word of caution, there is a lot of blood, sex and violence in this book, so if you are easily offended it might not be for you, but if you love that stuff you'll love this book. I'd say its a "Game of Thrones" level of sex and violence

This is the first and only book that ever made me scream at it in frustration because I thought the main character was doing something so boneheaded. I actually yelled out loud at a book. In public. The book is told both as a set of letters and in the first person, though the first person narrative takes up the majority of the work. The main character's journey takes him through the various strata of Aztec culture and, while I am no student of the Aztec civilization, it is rendered in living color and is really beautiful to behold. The characters are as human as you or I and by the end I was just wanted the story to continue onward.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is engrossing, entertaining, and a hefty number of pages so it should keep you in reading comfort for quite some time.

I love historical fiction, and the Aztec reign is tantalizing on a number of levels, so I'm surprised, myself, that I'm not rating this more highly. First of all, it's exhaustingly long! Secondly, it is unbelievably and monotonously (almost gratuitously??) bloody--in fairness, as was the Aztec reign itself. Perhaps the author intended the length of the book to indicate thorough research, but it all began to feel a little repetitive after a while, as did the blood and gore. Still, if you have a strong interest in this period of history, a strong stomach and sufficient time, it's probably worth the read.

Gary Jennings was able to bring South American history to life and tell a captivating story. I look forward to my drive to and from work to listen to this book. The only thing I would have changed is the amount of gratuitous sex, although some of that was pretty imaginative, as well! I would definitely recommend this book.

Better people than me have reviewed this book in literary detail. I just have to say that sometimes I look back on having read it and I actually miss the book. I want to look again at the maps drawn on the inside cover pages. By the time I finished reading it, I felt like I WAS an Aztec, so rich and complete and detailed was the narrative.
