The Prey of Gods

From a new voice in the tradition of Lauren Beukes, Ian McDonald, and Nnedi Okorafor comes The Prey of Gods, a fantastic, boundary-challenging tale set in a South African locale both familiar and yet utterly new, which braids elements of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and dark humor.

In South Africa, the future looks promising. Personal robots are making life easier for the working class. The government is harnessing renewable energy to provide infrastructure for the poor. And in the bustling coastal town of Port Elizabeth, the economy is booming thanks to the genetic engineering industry that has found a welcome home there. Yes, the days to come are looking very good for South Africans. That is, if they can survive the present challenges:

A new hallucinogenic drug sweeping the country....

An emerging AI uprising....

And an ancient demigoddess hell-bent on regaining her former status by preying on the blood and sweat (but mostly blood) of every human she encounters

It's up to a young Zulu girl powerful enough to destroy her entire township, a queer teen plagued with the ability to control minds, a pop diva with serious daddy issues, and a politician with even more serious mommy issues to band together to ensure there's a future left to worry about.

Fun and fantastic, Nicky Drayden takes her brilliance as a short story writer and weaves together an elaborate tale that will capture your heart...even as one particular demigoddess threatens to rip it out.

Truly one of the best books I have read in my life. This book is the winner of the Compton Crook Award for Best First Science Fiction Novel published in 2017. The award is given by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society.(Disclosure: I am a BSFS member.)This winner triumphed in a tough field. It is an amazing blend of science in a not too distant South Africa combined with mythology is a very well written, well paced, funny romp. Ms. Drayden has a wicked sense of humor that finds irony in the most mundane parts of life. The explorations of gender and coming of age, not in the same characters, are organic and not preachy. Watching this cast thread their ways through ethical and personal dilemnas makes a great read for adults and older YA readers. You do want to buy this book!

Sometimes a book moves me to write notes while reading. Lots of my kindle novels are full of sweary rants - people don't behave like this!!!! Stupid people being stupid for the sake of plot!!! Etc. (But with a lot more swear words.)I made three notes during this:omg i love this bookha funnyfantasticThat is all you need to know.It is wild and fast and just barely explained enough, but the amazingly clear POVs in each chapter drag you through it without breaking stride. I haven't enjoyed a book so much in ages.

Keep your eye on Nicky Drayden. This debut novel is a great piece of speculative fiction, set in a place where most SF avoids: Africa. The characters are interesting, complex, and struggle with challenges both phenomenal and mundane. The worldbuilding is on par with pro writers who have 10 books under their belts. A thoroughly modern story that entertains on many levels.

This book is fun, fantastic, and completely refreshing. It is also completely bonkers and shouldn't work, but Nicky Drayden is such a darn good writer that she manages to weave together all these distinct, fantastic voices into a book that I couldn't put down, one that made me shout in delight at nearly every other page. This is a really enjoyable read that manages to blend near sci-fi and fantasy in a really great way (how many other books feature robots and goddesses battling it out?) I loved all the characters (usually in a multi-POV, there's one that gets on my nerves, but that wasn't the case here), though Muzi won my heart first and foremost and I was rooting for him until the end. Read this; it is fantastically enjoyable and I look forward to more from this author. And perhaps even this same world again, hint hint! (less)

Fell in love with this book even before I started reading it. I had read previews a while ago and could not wait to get my hands on it. WOW!! I was not to be disappointed. Gods, monsters, dik-diks, awesome world building and AMAZING characters made this a book I will most definitely be reading again and again. It had me from page one and it was so much fun. Thank you Nicky Drayden for an awesome debut novel. Cannot wait to see what you come up with next.YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!!

This book has so many elements of stories that I normally love: living mythology, a cast that isn't primarily white, queer identity, and it's set in South Africa. So many things going for it and yet; nothing in particular grabbed me about this book. Perhaps it was the shortness of the chapters, so the constant POV shifts meant it took a long time before I really started to care about any of the characters (if I ever did). Or that, despite being set in SA in the future, race and racism are only mentioned obliquely. I seriously considered abandoning this book because I just didn't find it that entertaining.

This is one of those books that I added to my to-read list because it has just too many interesting sounding parts for me to ignore it. Set in South Africa? Dealing with ancient demi-goddesses, AI-uprisings, super-power granting drugs, and plenty of queer characters? Not the kind of thing I'm likely to pass up. And The Prey of Gods delivered on all of its promises. It's genre-bending and queer, plus the writing is solid and the characters all nicely fleshed out. If you like genre-bending, or are just looking for something a little different, check this one out.

Prey of Gods isn't a yuckfest as other reviews seem to be saying. It's fascinating and strange yet works, with an amused author voice.Be warned—terrible events occur. I could tell all these characters would come together and was tantalized guessing from the clues how that would happen. Plus the emotions are strong, the characters three-dimensional and vulnerable. Read it in about two sittings, another way to say five stars!
